The Icelandic Rune poem is preserved in four manuscripts of the Den Arnamagnæanske Samling, Copenhagen, the most recent of which is of the late 15th century.
This poem was said to be the most systematic of the Rune poems (Abecedarium Nordmannicum included) and has been compared to the metrical form of ljóðaháttr.
The poem consists of sixteen short rooms that discuss, in order, of the names of the letters of the Runic alphabet.
In each of these rooms contains three Kenningar elaborate circumlocutions that abound in Icelandic skaldic poems technique. The first and second lines are connected by alliteration and the third has two syllables allitterate on its behalf.
